Carmen

Opera Carmen in drawing

In this book, the grand piano is an ode to Bizet’s beloved instrument. From a musical duet (or is it a duel…?) for the white and black keys of the keyboard, I made this ‘drawn’ duet: a duet for the bright sun and the inky black night.

A Duet for Sun and Moon

The opera Carmen is a tragic story about gypsies, gitanos. Their life is an outdoor one. Picture it: the Spanish bright sun and the bright moon dance a duet, of day and night, of reality and dreams, of light and darkness.

Seville and flamenco: a duet for fantasy and reality

The rich origins of flamenco is demonstrated by the Museo del Baile Flamenco and the documentary film Latcho Drom (1993). The film is by Tony Gatlif, son of a Roma mother. A group of gypsy artists take a musical journey from east to west. From India with Kalbelia dance, you see how oriental Tingsha bells turn into brass zills in transit and then into western wooden castañuelas, castanets: the rhythmic symbol of flamenco for us Westerners.

Rhythmic Chestnuts

Castañuelasis comes from castaña, the Spanish word for chestnut. And it is castanets that evoke the Spanish atmosphere in opera Carmen – you could think of them as the musical fruits of Georges Bizet.

As a solo dancer ‘Ziaqua’, I practiced Indian Classical Bharata Natyam Dance and became inspired by the barefoot and vocal rhythms. This began my fascination with Eastern influences on Western dance history.
